Then Rags of the Poor - Marika Ninou
After the antics from "My Friend Lefterakis", it seemed time to center ourselves with some straight Rebetika. No clowns, balloons or other hijinks in this one -- Only Mariku Ninou baring her soul and singing her heart out. A composition from the great Vassilis Tsitsanis.
So many of the Rembetis lived remarkable lives. Mariku Ninou was born on a ship evacuating Greeks from Smyrna and baptized by the captain of the ship. Her second marriage was to an acrobat and, along with their young son, they performed as the "Two and a Half Ninous". Her Wikipedia Page is a concise and wonderful read.
The title of this one is a bit of a mystery. Mme. Google translates it as "Poverty for Tearing it Apart", Gollum534 has the title of "Then Rags of the Poor". My sense is that, somewhere out there, one could find a better translation (if you speak Greek and can offer up a better title, please put it in the comments). Speaking of translation, you should be able to find a Google-Translated version of the lyrics here. And while you are on that page, scroll down below the video for some amusing translations of other titles.
